The software and operating system is and you would only pay for services if you want upgrades (i.e. ProtonMail and ProtonVPN).I know it may be too technical and frustrating for many. With this guide, you can do it yourself, but if you are not technical or fearful of changes, here is how I can help make it all pain-free!
Getting the right phone, screen protector and case
Reformat it with the secure and private Graphene operating system.
Add applications such as Signal, Firefox, ProtonMail, Telegram VPN, etc.
Transfer over contacts and bookmarks from old phone
Walk you step-by-step through setting up and using the phone

1 - Get a non Google/Apple Phone
The following are good. I use GrapheneOS - no problems.

2 - Use a secure browser!
I use the Chromium browser built in with GrapheneOS - no problems.
3 - Get secure mail provider!
Secure your Communication!
Protonmail and Tutanota both have a free limited version you can try and then upgrade to use your own domain and such.

4 - Which Messaging App should I use?
Hands down it will be www.signal.org
How secure is it? Edward Snowden, Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg use it tells you about it.
